BT Hikes Cease Fee, Introduces New Regulations

The new regulations for termination of BT broadband services state that customers have to either request for a migration authorisation code (MAC) or go through any other stipulated alternate broadband migration or transfer procedure and if they fail to do either then they would have to pay £25.00 as cease charges.

Even for customers who have completed their minimum contract period, BT rules state that they will have to follow proper transfer procedure or pay the increased charge, with effect from 12 June 2009. The only customers with total immunity from this increased charge are those who relocate to new addresses where BT does not have its service yet.

A PC Pro reader from Edinburgh revealed this and sent it to the magazine saying that the company had not publicised this sudden hike in fee from £18.11 to £25, although a change was made to their terms and conditions.

Speaking in defence of the company, a BT spokesperson said that the company levied this charge to make sure that customers abided by the service transfer protocol or alternatively showed responsibility by paying the cost of incorrect termination procedures – click to compare broadband prices – The BT spokesperson further clarified that this was the exact cost of recovering equipment and making changes to their records and this increase was solely due to work complications arising out of the process of termination.
