Alternative Things to Do, Places to Visit in South Africa

The South African peninsula has a moderate climate throughout the year, with the advantage of being situated at the right latitude – turning it into a great vacation away from the cold North American and European winters.

During this short piece, I’m going to focus on the less famous locations of South Africa, places where you can get away from the hords of tourists while also enjoying the cheaper costs that you discover off the beaten path.

Kruger National Park
It’s the largest wildlife reserve in South Africa and extends 350 km from north to south and 60 km from west to east. The park features 8 main gates that permit entrance to the many campsites there. There is plenty of guesthouses near Krugar Park so it doesn’t need to be a mammoth return trip from Cape Town or whatever holiday resort you’re based in.

The Drakensberg Mountains
The Drakensberg Mountain Range is the most dramatic range of mountains in the South African Peninsula, going up to 3,482 meters (11,420 ft) in elevation. Caves are common in the easily worn-out sandstone, and numerous have paintings sketched by the indigenous bushmen. The Drakensberg Mountain Range has roughly 40000 works of bushman drawings and is the greatest collection of such drawings on the planet. There is evidence that the bushmen lived in the Drakensberg Mountains as long ago as 100,000 years ago. The Drakensberg Mountain Range is easily accessible from closeby Durban and you can normally book guesthouses in Durban very easily.

KwaZulu Natal
The KwaZulu region has become increasingly popular with tourists – principally sold as the Zulu Kingdom. It is a shame that many holidaymakers miss out on this experience, as many locals know that it gives visitors a myriad of things to do. For a long time it has been known as the Garden Province – the name being well deserved. There ought to be no trouble finding accommodation near KwaZulu.
