Cause for Celebration for the Mobile Industry in Gloomy Times

According to the latest report by GSMA, the total number of mobile broadband connections worldwide has reached one hundred million and the total number of mobile connections (inclusive of broadband) is a mind-numbing four billion.

The overall mobile industry growth is largely due to the recent surge of Internet enabled mobile devices. These include handsets, mobile Internet devices, netbooks and laptops (with onboard connectivity or a USB dongle to gain access via the mobile network).

Almost a thousand companies from the worldwide mobile industry are part of GSMA, which acts as an organization representing the interests of the industry.

GSMA’s main event, World Mobile Congress, which is about to take place at Barcelona, is expected to address many serious issues that confront the industry. The impact of global economic recession and ways to maintain growth in this scenario, along with the development of LTE are the two topics with highest priority.

The organization’s chief marketing officer, Michael O’Hara is optimistic about the near term future of the industry and said that continual innovations in the fields of Mobile Planet, Mobile Lifestyle and Mobile Broadband would drive this industry forward despite the economic scenario.

GSMA has also predicted that by 2013, the global mobile subscriber base will reach six billion, an astonishing achievement for the industry.
